Ore International 4 Tier Bookshelves - Espresso

The quality on this piece is substandard. We have just put together one of two that we purchased and already see that it has a poor paint job (you can see the color of the unfinished wood at the internal corners), no covers to cover the bolt heads, a scratch on one shelf, and in fact the top piece is so badly damaged I just got online to figure out how we can return it. The damage also shows this piece to be made of particleboard, not solid wood as you might expect from the description (I think the sides might be solid wood though). If this was priced at below $80, I might have given it a higher rating, but it definitely is not worth the current price. Ore International 4 Tier Bookshelves - Espresso

The Going-To-Bed Book [Board book]

For a little one who is reluctant to go to bed, sometimes a silly book is just the ticket. And when it comes to silly books, Sandra Boynton is the undisputed queen. In The Going to Bed Book, an ark full of animals watches the sun go down and then prepares for bed. They take a bath ("in one big tub"), find pajamas, brush their teeth, do exercises up on deck (imagine an elephant jumping rope, a moose lifting weights, and a pig doing handstands), and finally say good night.
The moon is high. The sea is deep.
They rock
and rock
and rock
to sleep.
Boynton's inimitable animal characters have graced the pages of scads of picture books over the years. She has an extraordinary knack for knowing what appeals to small children: simple rhymes, goofy animals in goofy settings, and sweet, comforting stories. This book, along with her many other board-book titles (Moo, Baa, La La La!, But Not the Hippopotamus, and others) will surely remain a favorite. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

A People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present

A People's History of the United States: 1492 to PresentA People's History of the United States: 1492 to Present

From Publishers Weekly

According to this classic of revisionist American history, narratives of national unity and progress are a smoke screen disguising the ceaseless conflict between elites and the masses whom they oppress and exploit. Historian Zinn sides with the latter group in chronicling Indians' struggle against Europeans, blacks' struggle against racism, women's struggle against patriarchy, and workers' struggle against capitalists. First published in 1980, the volume sums up decades of post-war scholarship into a definitive statement of leftist, multicultural, anti-imperialist historiography. This edition updates that project with new chapters on the Clinton and Bush presidencies, which deplore Clinton's pro-business agenda, celebrate the 1999 Seattle anti-globalization protests and apologize for previous editions' slighting of the struggles of Latinos and gays. Zinn's work is an vital corrective to triumphalist accounts, but his uncompromising radicalism shades, at times, into cynicism. Zinn views the Bill of Rights, universal suffrage, affirmative action and collective bargaining not as fundamental (albeit imperfect) extensions of freedom, but as tactical concessions by monied elites to defuse and contain more revolutionary impulses; voting, in fact, is but the most insidious of the "controls." It's too bad that Zinn dismisses two centuries of talk about "patriotism, democracy, national interest" as mere "slogans" and "pretense," because the history he recounts is in large part the effort of downtrodden people to claim these ideals for their own.

Little Red Book of Selling: 12.5 Principles of Sales Greatness

From Publishers Weekly

If salespeople are worried about how to sell, Gitomer (The Sales Bible) believes they are missing out on the more important aspect of sales: why people buy. This, he says, is "all that matters," and his latest book aims to demystify buying principles for salespeople. From the red cloth cover to the small trim size to the amusing (but not cloying) cartoons on almost every page, this is an appealing and accessible book. The author is obviously enthusiastic, if not manic, about sales, and though some of his mantras verge on hokey, much of his prose is straightforward and realistic. Each chapter includes a mini table of contents, pull quotes and takeaway sound bites, examples of typical whines from salespeople (e.g., "the client said they spent their whole budget") paired with a positive response (e.g., "Decision makers make the budget. Non-decision makers spend the budget"), and plenty of advice and ideas that can be taken in and studied as a whole or referred to at random for inspiration.

Product Description

Dr. Miles St. Clair is a leader in his field of genetic cloning. A Nobel Prize-winning scientist for his work cloning an ancient mummified primate, he is hired to retrieve DNA from the Shroud of Turin, believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. The project is funded by a private group of European businessmen, who invite him to France to delve deeper into the mystery of the shroud. When he arrives in Paris, he discovers that he actually has been hired to clone an ancient king, whose DNA has been extracted from religious relics. By doing so, his employers believe they will set in motion the Parousia, a Biblical prophecy of such epic proportions that its success will change the course of the world forever. His KingdomS Come is a gripping novel chronicling the clash between faith and science. His KingdomS Come: The Parousia Project

The Bible: A Biography (Books That Changed the World)

The Bible: A Biography (Books That Changed the World)For the Books That Changed the World series of brief "biographies" of momentous books, Armstrong accepted the arguably most daunting assignment. What other book has as long a history of influence as the Bible, or has affected more people and societies? The author of the sweeping histories of religion The Great Transformation (2006) and A History of God (1993) is, of course, up to the task and provides an excellent prĂ©cis of the writing and compiling of the Bible and the ensuing centuries of biblical interpretation. Armstrong traces the Bible's transformation from a miscellany of texts into scripture, to which the Jesus movement added the Gospel and the other New Testament texts pretty much in tandem with the development of midrash and the Talmud by non-Christian Jews after the 70 CE destruction of the third temple in Jerusalem. She shows both Christian and rabbinic traditions of interpretation subsequently converging upon charity or love as the essence of God. The subjects of the last three chapters—the medieval monastic practice of reading the Bible called lectio divina, Martin Luther's doctrine of sola scriptura, and intellectual modernity—are each considered for the ways they gave rise to interpretive movements that affected Christianity directly and spurred reactions in Judaism. This is one terrific little book. Olson, Ray

The Writings of Abraham Lincoln

Product Description

In The Writings of Abraham Lincoln, Volume 2, we learn of Lincoln's love for writing poetry. Below is just one example included in this book. In December, 1847, when Lincoln was stumping for Henry Clay, he crossed into Indiana and revisited his old home. He writes: "That part of the country is within itself as unpoetical as any spot on earth; but still seeing it and its objects and inhabitants aroused feelings in me which were certainly poetry; though whether my expression of these feelings is poetry, is quite another question." Near twenty years have passed away Since here I bid farewell To woods and fields, and scenes of play, And playmates loved so well. Where many were, but few remain Of old familiar things; But seeing them to mind again The lost and absent brings. The friends I left that parting day, How changed, as time has sped! Young childhood grown, strong manhood gray, And half of all are dead. I hear the loved survivors tell How naught from death could save, Till every sound appears a knell, And every spot a grave. I range the fields with pensive tread, And pace the hollow rooms, And feel (companion of the dead) I 'm living in the tombs.

books for babies

This review is from: Ten Little Fingers (Board Books for Babies) (Board book)
Ten Little Fingers by Annie Kubler is one of a series of books that is a perfect fit for very little ones. The rhythm and rhyme draws their attention and the illustrations are big blobs of color, sharply delineated from each other. You can start with an infant who is old enough to focus and they will be enthralled by the colors. The size of the book is good for holding open with one hand as you hold the baby in the other arm.Ten Little Fingers (Board Books for Babies)

his review is from: My Big Animal Book (Priddy Bicknell Big Ideas for Little People) (Board book) My son received this book for his first birthday and it has quickly become a favorite. He still chooses this book regularly at storytime and he is now 18 months old. Reasons to buy this book include...

1. Great book for language development. The animals are sorted into groups including Baby Animals, Pets, On the Farm, Birds, and At the Zoo. A great book for playing "Where's the..." and "What's that?" pointing games.

2. Clear, beautiful photos. Each animal photograph is also placed against a solid colored background so that the image really stands out.

3. Unlike other animal photography books, the pages are not an animal collage with all the animals mixed in together. Each animal is shown in a square or rectangle with the name of the animals printed in lowercase underneath. Babies and Young toddlers are often confused by jumbled images and prefer the simplicity of how the animals are presented in this book.

4. The book also has a rhyming, interactive text. For example on the zoo page it says, "I'm hard to see when I'm out in the snow. Who am I? (polar bear) I carry a trunk wherever I go. Who am I? (elephant). My toddler, like most, is highly attracted to rhyming text. My Big Animal Book (Priddy Bicknell Big Ideas for Little People)

The Book of Salt: A Novel

The Book of Salt: A NovelThe Book of Salt: A Novel

From Publishers Weekly

A mesmerizing narrative voice, an insider's view of a fabled literary household and the slow revelation of heartbreaking secrets contribute to the visceral impact of this first novel. From a few lines in The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book, Truong reimagines the Vietnamese cook who was hired by the famous residents at 27 rue de Fleurus. Bonh, as he calls himself, is an exile from his homeland, where he was denounced because of a homosexual relationship and banished by his brutal father. After three years at sea, Bonh ends up in Paris, where he answers Toklas's ad ("Two American ladies wish...") and enters the household of Gertrude Stein. The story begins in 1934 when the women he calls "my Mesdames" are about to tour America, and Bnh fears he'll be cast adrift once again. Flashbacks reveal his loneliness and guilt, his doomed love affairs (he enjoys a brief tryst with Ho Chi Minh, whom he knows only as "the man on the bridge") and his sadness at having abandoned his mother and his native land. The tone throughout is poignant, lightened by Bnh's subversive wit; for all his bitterness and resentment, he is a captivating narrator, as adept at describing Stein's literary salon as the contents of Toklas's kitchen. If Truong sometimes stretches the range of Bonh's understanding and powers of observation, interpreting even the thoughts of Stein herself, the narrative rings with emotional authenticity. Truong's supple prose is permeated with sensual detail, reminiscent of A Debt to Pleasure in its evocation of the erotic possibilities of food. But it is her intuitive understanding of the condition of exile-"the pure, sea salt sadness of the outcast"-that infuses her novel with richness and beauty.

From Booklist

Drawing inspiration from a fleeting reference in the Alice B. Toklas Cook Book (1954) to two "Indochinese" men who at one point cooked for Toklas and Gertrude Stein, Truong has concocted a delectable fictional memoir. Faced with the decision about whether to accompany Stein and Toklas to America, return to Vietnam, or remain in France, Binh, the Vietnamese cook who has labored for the unconventional ladies he has dubbed "The Steins," for about five years, reflects back on his troubled life and times. Interspersing his own story with that of his illustrious employers, Binh meanders back and forth through time, recounting his youthful misadventures in Vietnam, his time toiling as a galley hand aboard a sailing vessel, and his years spent cooking for the Steins and indulging in the joys and perils of the seamier side of Parisian nightlife. Using salt as a metaphor for "food, sweat, tears and the sea," and interweaving the narrative with suggestions of ingredients, recipes, and exotic dishes, Truong provides a savory debut novel of unexpected depth and emotion.    Mark Twain Audio CD CollectionMark Twain Audio CD Collection"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated." -- Mark TwainMark Twain (1835-1910) was the first American writer to capture the unique and colorful vernacular of his country's populace. Instead of striving to perfect any particular literary form, Twain strove to precisely imprint on paper the colloquial speech, mannerisms and experiences of the American people.
Twain's books earned him an enduring reputation as a satirist and humorist, but he also wrote great short stories. These stories, with their wonderful characters and witty turns-of-phrase, have defined in Americans' minds what it means to have been at a time in our country which was at once optimistic, exploratory and recklessly exploitative.
Listeners can still benefit today from hearing Mark Twain's stories and selections from his novels as they become again what they originally were: the oral history of our uniquely American consciousness.
Includes selections from Life on the Mississippi, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Roughing It, and The Autobiography of Mark Twain, and the short stories The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, The £1,000,000 Bank-Note, The Joke That Made Ed's Fortune, A Dog's Tale, A Story Without an End and many more.
Performed by Ed Begley, Sr., Walter Brennan, Brandon de Wilde, Will Geer, and David Wayne

Let's Talk About S-E-X: A Guide for Kids 9 to 12 and Their Parents

Let's Talk About S-E-X: A Guide for Kids 9 to 12 and Their ParentsLet's Talk About S-E-X: A Guide for Kids 9 to 12 and Their Parents
Sex remains one of the least comfortable — and thus least discussed — topics between parents and children. Even the most enlightened parent can get queasy at the prospect of "the talk," despite its importance in helping youngsters become well-informed teens and responsible adults. Let's Talk About S-E-X is a short, illustrated book that parent and child can sit down and read together. First created by Planned Parenthood in the 1980s, and taking a simple, factual approach to the subject, the book makes that crucial conversation possible and even enjoyable by encouraging open dialogue; offering clear, correct information; and giving strategies for age-appropriate discussions that neither judge nor frighten. The book discusses feelings, what's normal, how and why the body changes, making sense of love and sex, STDs, and much more. The simple language and illustrations invite young readers to revisit the information if they have not absorbed it all in one sitting.

Amazon.com Review

Equal parts droll and gorgeous nostalgia book and heartfelt plea for a renewed sense of adventure in the lives of boys and men, Conn and Hal Iggulden's The Dangerous Book for Boys became a mammoth bestseller in the United Kingdom in 2006. Adapted, in moderation, for American customs in this edition (cricket is gone, rugby remains; conkers are out, Navajo Code Talkers in), The Dangerous Book is a guide book for dads as well as their sons, as a reminder of lore and technique that have not yet been completely lost to the digital age. Recall the adventures of Scott of the Antarctic and the Battle of the Somme, relearn how to palm a coin, tan a skin, and, most charmingly, wrap a package in brown paper and string. The book's ambitions are both modest and winningly optimistic: you get the sense that by learning how to place a splint or write in invisible ink, a boy might be prepared for anything, even girls (which warrant a small but wise chapter of their own).

This book is designed as the perfect learning tool to help parents guide their child as he or she confronts the challenges of ADHD. Learning to Slow Down is unique because it is kid-centered, written from the child's point of view.
This updated edition includes easy-to-read text, fun cartoons, and activities, as well as loads of self-help tips for coping with friends, family, and schoolwork, getting organized, getting disciplined, and getting things done. Appropriate for ages 6-11. Full-color illustrations.

The Little Book of Value Investing (Little Books. Big Profits) [Hardcover]

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Browne's experience as managing director of investment firm Tweedy, Browne provides examples to support his lessons on value investing, a method of buying stocks that have fallen in price to earn the best return over the long term. Browne uses examples from successful investors (such as Benjamin Graham, Walter Schloss and Warren Buffet) to illustrate that value investing is the best way to make the most of one's investments. The zingy chapters titles ("Buy Stocks like Steaks...On Sale," "Around the World with 80 Stocks" and "Sifting out the Fool's Gold") are demonstrative of his penchant for metaphors, parables and anecdotes, which make this book as entertaining as it is informative. Browne's short chapters detail useful and time-tested concepts, including the significance of book value, which foreign economies are worth investing in, and who to watch for investment ideas. With detailed advice and thorough explanations, this book should prove an asset to both professional and amateur investors.

5 Shelf Bookcase Alder Wood Finish

The bookcase was moderately difficult to put together. Finish was excellent. Fit was fair. I recommend a carpenter's square to insure squareness when attaching the back. Overall strength is okay for miscellaneous items (but not heavy items like books). I'm not a fan of cam-lock fasteners and this one has many. Overall, if you have a good flat area to put this together and fair mechanical skills you should not have a problem. By the way, the value I am talking about is from another superstore site where you can get the shipping for free to your local store which makes this an excellent buy.

This review is from: 5 Shelf Bookcase Alder Wood Finish (Office Product)
I ordered this bookcase through Hirsch Books and Toys and was very pleased with the product. It came quickly, was easy to assemble and has been fine for me for almost 6 months. I do not have a problem with the instructions and trust me I know nothing about putting things together.
